Laguna Phuket Triathlon 2013

On Sunday the 24th November ‘The Race of Legends’ takes place in Phuket. This is the Laguna Phuket Triathlon and it is Asia’s premier  triathlon. It features a 1.8K swim, 55K bike and 12K run through amazing tropical beachfront and parkland. The race was created in 1994 by IMG, Laguna Phuket Resorts and PCH Sports. Over the past nineteen years the  race has attracted thousands of athletes as well as triathlon legends from across the globe, steadily growing in popularity year after year.

The race begins beach at the Outrigger Phuket Beach Resort with the swimming taking place in 2 separate bodies of water. Competitors swim 1,200 metres in the sea, then sprint 100 metres across the beach to swim the last 600 metres in a lagoon. The bike section takes the competitors out of the hotel complex and through the winding narrow roads, past some of Phuket’s luxury real estate, round the northwest coast. The final part of the race leads runners north through the Laguna Phuket resort complex and onto the  Laguna Phuket Golf Club, before looping back  through Canal Shopping Village and ending at the Laguna Grove.

The race certainly is one of the bigger events in Phuket’s sporting calender. Locals and holiday makers come out to cheer on the runners and hundreds of young students come out of school to line the roadsides, waving flags and cheering on the cyclists. The icon of Thai culture, the elephant, meets the leading competitors at the finishing line.

For family and friends this is also a great time to explore the beach and the area. There are some amazing Phuket luxury homes in the area to see as well as golfing opportunities, island hopping and water sports.
