Recipe of the Month: Thai Dips
November 28, 2013Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai are a pair of large islands in the middle of Phang Nga Bay, approximately in the middle of Phuket and the Krabi mainland. These islands are commonly described as one of the last undeveloped areas in the countr
y, and although the pace of development is quickening upon them (Koh Yao Noi in particular) they are still visually stunning islands that feel a world away form the crowds in Phuket.
The islands are fairly easy to get to by long tail boat, sailing from Bang Rong Pier on the east coast of Phuket. This is approximately 25 minutes from the Phuket luxury property on Naithon Beach. It is also possible to charter a boat from Ao Po Pier.
On the island things have changed little in the past 20 years. The island has a population of around 3,500 people, the majority of whom are keen to see the island retain its standing as relatively untainted by development. In 2002 Koh Yao Noi received the World Legacy Award for Destination Stewardship from Conservation International and National Geographic Traveler magazine for the eco-friendly home-stay programs that are offered by the local residents.
The other forms of employment on the island focus on fishing, rubber planting and rice farming, and activities available on the island include demonstrations of these crafts, and how they have been handed down through generations. As the island is relatively undeveloped banking facilities are not available, although internet access and a few shops and restaurants are accessible.
Koh Yao Noi is a great day out to experience nature away from the crowds and a way to compare the Phuket of old to the Phuket luxury real estate that is now evident on the main island, the best of the old and the new!
