May 22, 2013While staying at Naithon Beach Villa, Vista del Mar Phuket thoroughly recommend a visit to Old Phuket Town. Dating from the end of the 19th Century it is a fascinating mixture of modern life and stunning architecture with an abundance of personality! The town was built on the prosperity resulting from the tin mining industry and its story is visible in every street and alley, from the Sino-colonial
mansions and traditional temples to the shop houses and museum.
Start your day going to see the Promthep Clock Tower. This was the islands first clock tower and was built on top of the police station, although bizarrely a clock was not inserted for over 50 years! Also nearby is the Charter Bank, a classic Sino-Portuguese building whose history goes back to the tin-mining era.
While the day is still fairly cool head off to explore the shophouses in Thalang Road and perhaps the Soi Romanee. stop for lunch at one of the many cafes. When the sun starts to heat up it is the perfect time to explore the Wat Putta Nongkom (a Buddhist temple) and the award winning Thai Hua Museum.
Although this is a brief itinerary for your day in Old Phuket Town we are sure you will find yourselves stumbling across many hidden alleys, temples, shops and cafes that will leave you wanting to head back and see more!
